The Birds - Alfred Hitchc0ck's classic movie.

I have just watched that film and, while it was a terrific movie, I am a little baffled by the ending.
A small village being attcked by birds. Towards the end the leading lady is nearly killed by these birds and the hero takes her to the car and drives her to safety.   The End!   The End?????

Why were the birds doing that? It never explained it (or did I miss that part of the movie?)

Can anyone help me?
