Cobweb Dilemmas / Girls On Film / Owen Tromans @ The Marrs Bar (Worcester) 08/04/04
We arrived probably half way through the set by Cobweb Dilemmas, a band that I have seen a couple of times now and l have to say that they alwgys seem to pull something new out of their hats. Every tlme see them they have improved and grown in confidence and ability. I can quite comfortably say that this band are going places. They have the talent. .the personalities', the songs and also a talking Zippy doll. What more do you want. From their self-penned Play Safe and Change In Communication to covers of Bowie's Citles along with the relationship they seem to have with the audience they seem to e at the at the top of their game. Good luck to them.
We had stories of Love, hate, disease, homoerotic biceps, jersey, death and bad hair.... and that was just in the on-stage banter of Chris and Pete, two of the nicest and most hard working guys on the Worcester Music Scene. Girls on Film are their two piece side project. You would of thought that being in one of Worcesters finest spatter punk rock bands (AWWBLOT - Google 'em) would be enough for these guys, but no, they seem to have an over flow of amazing catchy hook laden, awe inspiring, speaker melting , poke-fun-at-the-innocent-and-down-trodden-cause-everyone-is-fair-game ism, power riffed, drum blasting, heart felt, gut rumbling, knee trembling, duck arsed rock and roll tomfoolery complete the comic timing of seasoned pros, which i guess after over 10 years doing the rounds, working together in various bands and side projects and basically been damn good mates, they have the kind of chemistry that you just have to admire. Owen Tromans is an altogether different story. Extremely talent singer, with a great band behind him (The Elders) but the songs seemed to lack a certain something which was a shame cause I have heard so much good about this band. Owen has the ability portray a song in much more than just sound. His facial expressions and hand gestures say just as much as any words he could sing. The band have the ability to turn a simple tune into one hell of a sounds cape but still, it left me wanting more. Maybe I was spoilt by the two previous bands and miss the banter and instant relationship with the audience.
Having said that, I would quite happily check this band out again, just to see if they are actually good, or it was just he beer making me lose track of what was going on.
