Plenty of folks starting out in the music scene give their songs their first airing at an open mike night - like those held at the 11.47 Club at the Cellar Bar in Worcester. I popped down for a very quick look-in the other night - quite a few local movers on the local scene in the crowd - Broughton Hackett of the Rock-It Dogs, Chris of the Donns, Adam and Danny of Zebedy Rays and Chris Bennion of the excellent Not Just Sauce website - the local sober equivalent of the anarchic but always visitable Hereford Music Forum. Couldn't stay too long but I'll definitely be back for another shufti.
Duw but it's been quiet on the music scene this last week or so - so great to catch an overdue taste of a band who've put out one of the best local songs in recent years. The number's called 'A Song For' and the band is Kiddy's own Meg - appearing at the superb Tardebigge 'Bigge Venue' just outside Redditch. This more than capable foursome have an electro Talking Heads feel with a approaching rolling thunder feel - check out the excellent 'Chips' - played on the Session a couple of weeks ago I think They've put out a couple of new CD's so that's my in-car listening sorted for the next few days
Saw Evesham's Blackout a couple of weeks before Christmas but drummer Ben has another project on the go with the energetic pop-punksters that are Secret Sound - who I think have picked up the baton that Plot Against Paris recently dropped. Difficult to pigeon-hole this promising and professional threepiece - influences are Reuben with a touch of Green Day - and some subtle heavier touches thrown in. Particularly impressed with Greg's seamless and simultaneous guitar tuning while indulging in a bit of audience banter - other bands take note Secret Sound are my early tip as an outfit to watch out for this year!
