Great to check out a new venue and this week it was at Keystones in Worcester (what used to be the police club). Opening up were covers outfit Tasha - who has dual South African and Evesham nationality - she's writing some of her own stuff so we might hear more soon
There's always a smile on your face guaranteed with Worcester's premier ska-popsters The Donns. Their sound is a cross between Specials and Madness but with a completely original and fun-based feel. Some risqué lyrics just to spice things up as well - oh and here's an interesting snippet - the new bass player's dad apparently played on Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer'!
Good to bump into Pete 'Mr Worcester' Adams, also James (ex-Plot Against
Paris) and Emma of Will Dance For Chocolate - who was helping out before dashing off to their own gig with The George Cowley Experience.
'This is the furthest south we've ever played!' said frontman John of Worcester pop-punksters Silver Tequila - true as they've only been going a short while and won the Worcester Battle of the Bands with only their fifth gig. Instantly enjoyable rock fodder from the likeable local lads who're gradually adding to their playlist of good-time hummable numbers.
I always like to see this lot play and I think they'd go down a storm over the county line - how about it Hereford?
Back to the old stamping ground of the Marrs Bar with a Task In Hand promotion slung together by Cape Of Good Hope's Willis - featuring the acts I missed a couple of weeks ago because of the rugby - wahey!
Worcester's Cobweb Dilemmas wouldn't have been out of place playing at New York's CBGB's in the late 70's - loads of Television, Richard Hell and Talking Heads overtones to their driving numbers with a rare cover of 'Cities' from the 'Fear Of Music' album thrown in as a reminder.
They're a different-feelgood outfit who've been moving in the right catchy direction - new CD out soon and they're playing the Cavern Club in Liverpool tonight! I've never seen a toy Zippy used as a plectrum before though
It's that man again - Pete Adams who together with sidekick Chris Wemyss form the stand-up duo - sorry that should read AWWBLOT spin-off Girls On Film. You'd think that by now they'd have agreed what their songs were about as there seemed to be some slight opinion differences. Seriously though this outfit are as much fun between songs as they are performing great ditties like 'Break' and 'He-Man' - particularly appreciated the extra free bonus number - 'not included in the admission price' (!)
Visiting outfit for the night was Owen Tromans from Winchester with his support band The Elders - some of who also gig as Polly And The Billets-Doux - that's gotta be worth a Google! Very much a freely admitted Rust-era Neil Young influence to this lot so a passable if not over-taxing end to an pleasing and unexpected Tuesday night outing - why not?
