Andy O'Hare Reviews - 25/04/08 - Cobwebs, The Knowing, Meg, Unkle Monty

25/04/08)

Down to my local for a sparkling assortment of the best of the local up-and-comers - kicking off with a acoustic set from a Tastyhead-ish cut-down version of The Knowing - big mates of tonight's headliners Unkle Monty. Now developed into a full-blown Muse-ish outfit on the Birmingham club circuit - tonight's appearance of Marc on vocals and Ben on guitar was how this pleasing outfit originally kicked off a few years ago - spooky!

Fastest-moving band on the Worcester scene have to be Emma, Dan and Kieran that are Cobweb Dilemmas - a spiky and blowing Television-ish set

- from the trio with a fetish for soft toys and late 70's New York - they're a fast improving outfit but I wonder what they'd be like the next time I catch them though?

Great to see John aka Terry Trillion and now in Lords Of The Flatbush, Gav McDonald of Plot Against Paris originals Boot Hill Town and Stu of Rock Dog Project - it's well worth your while Googling some of this lot folks!

I last saw Unkle Monty at the excellent Bigge Venue at The Tardebigge in Redditch a few months ago and I've gotta say that if you're up for a heavy-bluesy night out with more original riffs than I've counted for many a moon, then the ex-Volume One-ers won't let you down. A solid blend of Free-ish and Ted Nugent mainstream that's foot-tappingly feelgood and I guarantee it'll tick all the right boxes for you metal-heads out there

Next night we're down in the Cathedral's shadow at Worcester's newest venue Keystones. I love these recent sparkling Friday night promotions - thrown together by Green Cables Promotions - which is of course the thinly-disguised alias of Emma of local chick-rockers Will Dance For Chocolate

Shame to miss starters Ash and Rachel that are A&R - another time maybe guys - so straight then into the main course of the snarling and approaching thunder sound of Kidderminster's finest that are Meg. There were crackling numbers like 'Fireworks' and 'Chips' - and a jangly cover of 'Virginia Plain' from the self-proclaimed cynics - but the renaissance of 'A Song For' was pure emotional - thanks guys!

Good to see The Donns manic frontman Joe, ex-Chocolater Jess - and also Harvey of The George Cowley Experience - despite our different views of the Hereford scene - hmmm

Were you paying attention? Headliners tonight at Keystones were Cobweb Dilemmas, fresh from the previous evening at the Marrs Bar but with a tangibly more mature and accomplished set of their CBGB's-era-esque tributes from the night before. Perhaps a bit more of a Patti Smith feel coming into the mix I thought - but proof for me that if you've got a great original sound - why not try it out on the rest of us - ok?
