As far as I can tell, it depends on a number of things.
If you're a covers band, you should be able to get paid 'work' in any pub that accomodates covers bands as long as your set fits in with what they want. I'd imagine you should get > £100 for the night.
If you're an originals band, finding a place to play is hard enough, without even expecting to get paid. There are very few pubs that will accomodate original bands let alone pay them. Primarily this would appear to be (I assume) because the locals won't know your music so they could get 'scared off' by it and the pub ends up out of pocket. This partly explains why there is a rise in the "we won't put you on unless you can guarantee to bring N fans" attitude which stinks.
The other issue here is that of charging entry which seems to make things even worse.
For originals bands this really leaves places where people kind of expect to pay to get in but go anyway. I'm counting the Marr's Bar e.g. in this group even though, to be honest, I've never been to a "pay on entry" event there. Unfortunately there are very, very few of those.
The going rate in Leominster 24 miles away is 2 x 45 min sets for around £150- £180 and the pubs that pay are regular music hotspots and draw a croud on them nights... ususaly a thursday or a sunday night!
I wouldn't expect to get paid at all tbh. I'd rather the pub not charge entry fee, and more people turn up. If they offer money, it's obviously good, but it's all about getting ourselves out there and getting our name about. I'd rather have 20 new fans than a few quid.
