A very early kickoff to last Saturday's gig in aid of St Michael's Hospice at the Imperial in Hereford - so I only caught the last bit of Jivestick's stoner grungy set. Still have to say I like the cut of their jib and they seem to be making steady improvements - despite saying they didn't have a clue what they were doing! Good that frontman Dave dispelled that totally unfounded rumour about guitarist Nathan and his girlfriend - looking forward to the CD guys!
First time I've seen Distorted Waves who describe themselves as 70/80's-influenced blues-rockers but I'd say they were more Iron Butterfly than Iron Maiden. I got a very 60's feel to this outfit and that certainly ticked the boxes for me. Vocalist Kirk has a very Jim Morrison-ish 'Crawling King Snake' sound but the cover of 'Back Door Man' was more Howlin' Wolf than The Doors. This was classy stuff from a classy outfit - but you can make your own mind up as they're playing live in a couple of weeks' time here on the show!
It may have been a bit of a sweaty humid night but it certainly wasn't a 'Bad Saturday' as Dandelion Killers kicked into the tightest and best set I've ever seen from the Ross-on-Wye threesome. A sneak preview of some of the new songs that might just be aired at the Wyeside festival - together with established local classics like 'Suburbia Falls', the Morroconi-ish 'John Wayne' and my current humalong favourite 'Golden Age'. An utter quality treat and thanks for the mention lads!
