"The other guy was slightly odd but still worth watching. "
Oh bloody charming! Well I shall not bother to be a serious musician again.. I was making an effort and everything even singing in tune.. no pleasing some people sheesh
very much enjoyyed the violin player at the last Acoustic Lunch. JohnJ I think his name was. Amazing music. The other guy was slightly odd but still worth watching. Its really a great place for live music, shame they dont do more of it.
also thought Anna Rice had a terrific voice, as did the singer from the last act
looking foward to seeing Claire Boswell play. iare flo rowland and carol sampson playing at all in the future?
Acoustic Lunch at the Old Rectifying House 29.03.09
Review by Lisa Ventura
The inaugural Acoustic Lunch event at the Old Rectifying House was extremely well attended and we were all a little concerned that this was a fluke of some kind.We neednt have worried though, as the second event was just as well attended, if not more so.
The Worcester News ran a short feature on it on Friday and Andy OHare mentioned it extensively on the Friday Session last week, so I ventured round to talk to some of the people there to ask them where they had heard of the event. Many of them said they had heard it mentioned on the radio or read it in the Worcester News, and thought they would have a change of scenery by visiting town and having some lunch out while enjoying the music. The power of PR does indeed work, and the venues location certainly plays a part in attracting an audience to this quaint riverside pub and restaurant. In todays crowd I noticed esteemed Worcester musician Jamie Knight, Poor Bob Jones and the guys from Blue Radio Records, amongst others. These events are certainly attracting the cream of the Worcester music scene.
First on the bill today was Johnj and the Retinal Circus. One half of this double act is Craigus Barry, who is one of the organisers of the very popular Llama Lounge events that take place at the Angel Centre.Despite one or two technical hiccups I very much enjoyed these guys, and look forward to seeing them again.
Marzipan Moon are fast becoming one of my favourite acts on the local music scene and I love their mix of covers and original songs, one of which was written especially for last years Worcester Music Festival. Black Cat Bone appeared recently at Poor Bob Joness Blues Night at the Cellar Bar and their mix of blues with a modern twist is always a pleasure to listen to.
The Players bill themselves as three accomplished musicians who all play at a different height, weight, age and level of hairiness, weariness and inner kafuffle, and this description was not far wrong! They werent completely acoustic but despite this they still played a storming set and were a welcome addition to the line up this afternoon.
Anna Rice is fast becoming a regular at local gigs and her soulful voice suited the venue and the atmosphere perfectly.Anna played at the Worcester Music Festival last year and I hope to see her on the bill again this year.
Finally, we were given a huge treat when The Misers played some of the songs from their debut album that they have never played live before. These were a real crowd pleaser and their mix of acoustic rock, folk, soul and country was the perfect end to a perfect afternoon of live music in a perfect venue.
