Still quiet on the night-out scene in Hereford this past week so a treat then to catch one of my favourites at Worcester's Marrs Bar - reopening after their New Year booze cruise - sorry that should read vacation and refurbishing. It's the mega-gigging Dandelion Killers of course! All the catchy spirited stuff we've come to expect from the dynamic Ross threesome with very much a Small Faces feel to some of their more recent numbers - but only 'sustained assault' adequately describes drummer Paul's treatment of his kit. A good response too from the packed venue - one great comment 'Why aren't this lot playing the NIA?' Well hopefully soon but not too soon please
Great to see Dave of Jivestick and Smell Your Mum promotions in the crowd - also Brendan 'Gippa/Never Mind The Bullocks' Stephens and Chris of the Not Just Sauce website. DLK were again supporting Bromyard boogie boys Mars Bonfire who crank out their own metal riffs intermixed with classics such as 'Black Dog' and 'Crossroads'. A bit derivative for me but if you're a fan of blues metal and Mars Bonfire in particular (and there sure are plenty) then you'll have gone home happy.
Another trip to the north-east - well the superb Bigge Venue at The Tardebigge in Redditch at any rate - for another Thursday night selection of original talent. First up were Streetsider from Brum who are good old-fashioned blues rockers with a blue-collar Ted Nugent feel.
They weren't afraid to over-the-top the wah-fuzz either - full marks!
It's hard not to think Kurt Cobain when you see the guitarist of Kidderminster's Lyck take the stage - and that's a fair pointer to their sound as well - with shades of Euro-rock (thanks Nick) and a couple of Pistols-esque intros. Wow I've got this far without even mentioning the two girls who front up this promising outfit - d'oh!
More stoner grunge from the wonderfully named Columbo's Mac from Stratford whose song titles follow a theme that mostly falls after the 9 o'clock watershed. Conceptual Muse-ish stuff with original sparkling instrumental work - but a bit let down by avoidable glitches and unsatisfying spacy emo-ish harmonies.
A very late start for final acoustic outfit State Of Mind from Redditch and I've got to say lads a bit too late for most of the crowd also - hope to catch you again though. Top marks though to the work done by The Tardebigge's manager Barry who's crafted a venue with a great sound and
