Who are you? Im Paul J Rose, a 29 year old Singer/Songwriter from Claines in Worcester. I first picked up a guitar in 1996, have played in local bands The George Cowley Experience and Shadowlands and have been a solo artist since 2004. I recorded my debut album A Nice Cup Of Tea in 2006. What do you do?My main love is writing songs; getting out on to the streets of the county equipped with my guitar, harmonica and gob and busking them. I also gig at venues which promote acoustic music so I can play my quieter material. I also play a bit of blues guitar with Worcester duo R&B Jones. Do you enjoy your job? Yeah most of the time. I work as a Laboratory Technician for a research firm in Malvern and spend most of my time in electronics and semiconductor processing labs. I consider myself fortunate to have a job with regular hours and reasonable conditions an increasingly rare thing these days. Can you recommend a use for Worcestershire Sauce? Good stuff in a Beef Stew; it really peps it up. It kept me warm on many a winter evening in my damp flat in St Johns a few years ago. What do you think of the Worcester music scene at the moment? I think it is great. The Cellar Bar in Forgate Street has two great acoustic nights a month which I love going to. The Marrs Bar kick-started much music in Worcester when it opened and still does a grand job. There are so may top acts around my favourites being (in no particular order) Sam Isaacs, The Machine Breakers, The Brazilians, And What Will Be Left Of Them, Dave The Book Guy, Flo Rowlands, Charles Charles, Meteor Street, The George Cowley Experience, R&B Jones. Do you speak any foreign languages? Im been learning Russian for about a year I love the country; its vastness and history. Is there one song you really wish that you had written? Any number of Richard Thompson songs, but for its effortless tenderness and real honesty I would choose 'I Misunderstood' from Rumour and Sigh (1991) What would you like to be remembered for? Being the bloke who played music that brightened up a damp street on a dull day. What do you think you will be remembered for? Pissing off shop keepers and smug Rotarians Do you have a favourite line from a song? There are two and I cant decide which I like more: I wish I had a bottle Right here in my dirty face To wear the scars, to show from where I came (A Design for Life, MSP) In the paper today, tales of war and of waste But you turn right over to the TV page (Dont Dream its over, Crowded House) What do you think is the best thing to happen in the last 25 years? Wonderbras. What do you think is the worst thing to happen in the last 25 years? Brutal globalization and free market economics prevailing worldwide. Which is best, Apple Mac or PC? I like the way Apple Mac laptops have that illuminated apple at the back of the display other than that I couldnt possibly give a constructive answer. Whats the first record you ever bought? Gilbert and Sullivans HMS Pinafore performed by The Doyly Carte Opera Company. What is the most embarrassing song on your MP3 player right now? Im afraid I havent got an MP3 player so that conveniently gets me out of that question. What song do you want played at your funeral? Motorcycle Emptiness (MSP) Who is your favourite James Bond? Sean Connery especially in that come back one he did. If you only had a choice of two shops would you get your groceries from Marks and Spencers or Lidl? Lidl they have the best range of sausages including those huge threatening looking frankfurters in brine. If you had to watch one film, all day, everyday, for a week, which film would it be? Withnail and I; hilarious but genuinely moving as well. I never tire of the poetic dialogue and characters. Do you have a favourite time of the day? Sunrise; especially in autumn after a night of rain. What book/magazine are you reading? The Distant Scene by Fred Archer. Tales of country characters and life in the shadow of The Bredon Hills in the period between the 1st and 2nd World War. Have you any advice or thoughtful insight for our readers? It wasnt just the USSR that fed its people propaganda. Leave your copy of The Sun or Mail on the shelf..you are more intelligent.
